Want to Save Your Christmas Cards? Here’s How to Create a Holiday Flip Book!

Happy new year, readers! Now that the holiday season is over, you may find yourself wondering what to do with all of the lovely Christmas card you received! Should you keep them, scan them, discard them? I tend to scan and then discard mine, but if you are the type of person who loves revisiting past memories, our fellow photo organizer Christy Wright has a simple craft project that helps you do just that while preserving the cards in a neat way! Take it away, Christy!

Want to Preserve Christmas Cards? Create a Flip Book!

I have been a professional photo organizer for 4 years now, but I have been taking photographs and preserving memories on my own for a long time! One favorite project of mine is preserving the amazing photo Christmas cards we receive each year. I used to make photo books with them, but that came with the tedious work of cutting them to fit and, making copies, etc. For me to commit to something long term, it needs to be fast and easy, so when my mom showed me her Christmas Card flip books, I was hooked!

While the idea is super simple, I have learned a few hacks over the past few years to help this project work well AND takes minimal time! The photo cards I receive are now turned into little coffee table books – with our card on top of each year. I hope this helps solve your dilemma of how to easily store and enjoy Christmas Cards year after year!

I’m a Perfect Pinnable!

Tools Needed

Here’s what you need to create this type of flip book:

  • 3-hole punch (This has worked much faster than the way I used to do it with one!)
  • Metal rings (I use these 1.5” ones – smaller would work but bigger would be overkill unless you have a large number of cards).
  • Ruler (optional – I do not use one).

How to Create the Christmas Card Flip Book

1. Use 2 of the 3 holes on the punch, and center the card between them (this is where you can use ruler to measure
exactly – but I just eyeball it!). These will be the place holes where your cards will get hooked together.

2. After punching, stack the cards in two piles by orientation – vertical & horizontal.

3. Tweak the order however you want (family first, size order, reverse size order,
etc.)!

4. Slide one ring through all of the left side holes and hook.

5. The right holes will easily line up – thread through the ring and you are ready to go!

6. Enjoy putting them out and reliving the memories year after year!

Helpful Hints

  • I keep all cards with handwritten notes or photos.
  • I refold letters to fit them on the rings, so they are still readable while flipping. Don’t be afraid to cut things down to fit best!
  • I have learned if you put the biggest card right under yours, it will give the book a cleaner look. Alternatively, – you can order by size smallest to biggest and it will have a different look. I do none of this! This is about memories and not perfection for me.
  • Putting the stiffer cards on the top and bottom and close to the top helps protect the pile.

I’m so inspired! I, too, use to cut up my Christmas cards and I have two beautiful Holiday albums that I love with all the cards over the years, but I stopped at about 2014 and now have large envelopes of cards from the remaining years that just sit on a shelf and stare at me and give me guilt. I am totally doing your idea and next year I will have my albums on display plus a basket with these flip books!! Thanks Christy and Caroline!!

I think I will do this. Some friends send me family photo cards every year and I keep them all. It’ll be interesting to have them all together, and so simple to do. Thanks.
